Point spread meaning in basketball betting (with PBA and NBA examples)
What a basketball point spread (handicap) means, how -6.5 and +6.5 work, and what a push is. Invented numbers, educational only, 21+.
Education only. All numbers are invented. Betting carries risk of loss; you must be 21+. See responsible gambling.
A point spread (also "handicap") gives the weaker team a head start so a bet on either side is closer to a coin flip.
How it works
Invented example: Team A -6.5, Team B +6.5.
| Final score | Bet on A (-6.5) | Bet on B (+6.5) |
|---|---|---|
| A wins by 10 | Wins | Loses |
| A wins by 7 | Wins | Loses |
| A wins by 6 | Loses | Wins |
| B wins | Loses | Wins |
The half point means no tie. On a whole-number line such as -7, winning by exactly 7 is a push, usually a refund; confirm in the operator's rules.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the favourite "winning" is enough: with a spread, the margin matters.
- Ignoring the price. Spread bets still carry the bookmaker's margin; see implied probability.
- Chasing losses after a late "backdoor cover" in garbage time.

Frequently asked questions
What does -6.5 mean in basketball betting?
The team must win by 7 or more points for a spread bet on it to win. A bet on the other side (+6.5) wins if that team wins or loses by 6 or fewer.
What is a push?
On a whole-number spread such as -7, winning by exactly 7 is a push: the stake is normally returned. Half-point lines like 6.5 avoid pushes. Check the operator's rules.
Ano ang point spread?
Handicap ito sa score para pantayin ang laban. Ang -6.5 ay kailangang manalo ng 7 puntos o higit para manalo ang taya.
