How to read basketball odds: PBA and NBA betting explained for beginners

Basketball is hugely popular in the Philippines, and many fans are curious how odds work before they ever place a bet. Here is the vocabulary.

Moneyline

You pick who wins. With decimal odds, a lower number is the favourite. For example (invented), Team A 1.50 and Team B 2.60.

Point spread

A handicap applied to the score. If Team A is -6.5, it must win by 7 or more for a spread bet on A to win; a bet on B wins if B wins or loses by 6 or fewer.

Totals (over/under)

You bet on whether the combined points exceed a line, for example 210.5 (invented). Both teams' scoring counts.

Props and live betting

Player props (a player's points, rebounds or assists) and in-game betting move quickly. Fast markets make it easy to overspend, so decide your limit beforehand.

Things to remember

• Odds include the bookmaker's margin, so the implied probabilities add up to more than 100%.
• Past form does not guarantee results; losing streaks happen.
• Set a budget first and never chase losses.

Check the sportsbook first
