The basics
Each player gets two cards and may draw a third. Cards 2-9 count face value, an ace counts 1, and tens and face cards count 0. Add the cards and keep only the last digit: 7 + 8 = 15 counts as 5. The closest total to 9 wins, and an eight or nine on the first two cards is usually called a "natural". Drawing rules, ties and payouts vary by table or app, so read them before betting.
Step by step
- Everyone is dealt two cards face down; the banker or dealer also gets two.
- Players look at their cards and add them, keeping only the last digit.
- A player with a total of 8 or 9 on two cards (a natural) usually cannot or need not draw.
- Otherwise a player may usually draw one more card (a third card) if the table allows it, hoping to get closer to 9.
- Hands are compared with the banker's; closest to 9 wins. Equal totals are a tie, handled by the table's rule (often the banker wins ties or bets are returned).
Examples (invented)
| Cards | Sum | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| K + 9 | 9 | 9 (a natural) |
| 7 + 8 | 15 | 5 |
| 10 + Q | 20 | 0 |
| A + 7 + 3 | 11 | 1 |
Odds and house rules
Because rules vary, we publish no house edge for Lucky 9. Where a banker or house is involved, the operator's rules set the edge; assume it favours the house over time and set a budget. A related game with fixed rules is baccarat.
Lucky 9 versus baccarat
Both score by the last digit and treat 9 as best. In baccarat the drawing is automatic and fixed, and you only bet; in Lucky 9 table versions players often decide whether to draw a third card, and the banker role and payouts differ by venue. That is why baccarat has published house-edge figures and Lucky 9 does not.
Common mistakes
- Counting 10 and face cards as 10 instead of 0.
- Forgetting to keep only the last digit of the sum.
- Assuming "due" cards: each deal is independent.
- Joining a social-media "lucky 9 room" with deposits to a personal account.
Playing for money online
Treat apps promoted through chat groups or social media as high risk: check the exact address with our checker, never pay a personal account, and see scam signs. We recommend no app. More card games: Tongits, Pusoy Dos.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Lucky 9?
Players try to get a hand total closest to 9, counting only the last digit of the sum. Aces count 1, number cards their value, and tens and face cards 0. A two-card 8 or 9 is usually a 'natural'. Rules about drawing a third card and payouts vary by table.
Is Lucky 9 the same as baccarat?
They are similar because both use last-digit totals and 9 is the best score, but rules for drawing, payouts and how many hands are played differ.
Is real-money Lucky 9 online legal?
We found no PAGCOR statement specific to Lucky 9. Only play on a site you can verify on PAGCOR's lists, and be wary of apps shared in chats. You must be 21+.
