The basics

Tongits is a rummy-style game, usually for three players with a standard 52-card deck. The dealer is usually dealt 13 cards and the others 12 (house rules vary), and the rest form the stock (the draw pile). The aim is to form melds and get rid of cards, or to hold fewer points than the others when the round ends.

Melds, in plain terms

• Set (tatlong magkakapareho): three or four cards of the same rank, for example three 7s.
• Run (sunod-sunod): three or more cards in sequence in the same suit, for example 4-5-6 of hearts. Whether an ace can be high as well as low depends on the table.

How a turn works

1. Draw the top card of the stock, or take the previous player's discard if you can use it to form a meld right away (you must show the meld).
2. Optionally lay down melds from your hand.
3. Optionally sapaw: add a card to a meld already on the table, yours or an opponent's, where the table rules allow it.
4. Discard one card to end your turn.

Card points

When hands are counted, an ace is usually 1 point, cards 2-10 their number, and jack, queen and king 10 points each. Lower is better.

Worked count (invented hand)

The stock runs out. Player A holds 2, 5 and king: 2 + 5 + 10 = 17. Player B holds 9 and jack: 9 + 10 = 19. Player C holds 3, 4 and 6: 3 + 4 + 6 = 13. Player C has the lowest total and wins the round. Note that a single king (10 points) costs more than a 2, 3 and 4 held together (9), which is why high cards are expensive to keep.

Ways a round ends

• Tongits: a player gets rid of every card in their hand and wins.
• Draw: a player with an exposed meld calls "Draw" when they think their remaining points are lowest. Others can usually fold or challenge, and the lowest total wins. Many tables punish a challenger who loses, or a caller with no exposed meld, so check the rules.
• Empty stock: when the stock runs out, the lowest total wins.

Common mistakes

• Keeping high cards (10, J, Q, K) too long: they cost the most when counted.
• Calling Draw without counting what the others could hold.
• Assuming every app uses the same payout and scoring rules. They do not.

Free play versus real money

Many Tongits apps are free social games with play chips, and some have real-money tables. Social play is not gambling; real-money play is, and you must be 21+. Do not assume a free app is safe to pay into.
