Texas Hold'em in brief

Each player gets two private cards; five community cards are dealt in stages (flop, turn, river) with betting between. The best five-card hand wins, or everyone else folds. Hand ranks from high to low: straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card.

A hand, step by step

1. Blinds: two players post forced bets to start the pot.
2. Pre-flop: each player gets two private cards and a round of betting follows (fold, call or raise).
3. Flop: three community cards, then betting.
4. Turn: a fourth card, then betting. River: a fifth card, then final betting.
5. Showdown: remaining players show cards; the best five-card hand using any of the seven wins the pot.

Cash games versus tournaments

In cash games you can leave with whatever chips you have. In tournaments you pay a buy-in (plus a fee) for a stack of chips and play until one player has them all; prizes go to the top finishers, so most entrants win nothing and results swing widely.

Rake: an invented example

Suppose a table takes 5% of each pot as rake, with a cap. Over 1,000 pots of ₱1,000 each, ₱50,000 goes to the site, and that comes out of the players' pockets as a group. A player must beat the other players by more than the rake just to break even, which is why most casual players lose over time.

Rake and variance

Poker is played against other players, but the site takes a rake from pots or tournament fees, so players as a group lose a little. Skill can beat other players over a large sample, but short-term swings (variance) are large, and most casual players lose money. Set a budget and stop at it.
